The Absent Owners' Guide
to Profitable Rental Home Ownership
Your own full web site carries the burden of additional work and cost. You can either get someone else to build it, look after it and host it, or you can do it all yourself. A word of warning, though. A full web site with a lot of information on it will not necessarily in itself provide a way for potential renters to find it via an internet search. Web site promotion, in particular getting a placement in several of the major search engines, is a skilled and time-consuming job in itself.
These are the steps you need to take if you want to put your own web site onto the internet, and have it work effectively as a doorway for potential renters of your home.
Construct your site. There are many software packages that will do this very effectively now, some of the easiest to use are available free on PC magazine cover discs. Be aware that it will involve you in more time than you expect before you end up with a site you are happy with.
Host your site. This does not mean that you have to go out and buy your own domain name, then rent space on a server to host your pages. You can go this way if you want, and it does have advantages when it comes to site promotion. But all you really have to have is one of the personal web pages that are offered free by a lot of the Internet Service Providers (ISPs). They offer only a small amount of space for your site, but it will generally be more than enough for your needs.
Maintain your site. You will have to find a way to upload and retrieve your web pages on whichever server it is hosted. To do to make changes or additions you pull down the appropriate page off the server, modify it with the same software you used to make it, and send it back to the server.
Promote your web site. Internet users should be able to find it when they use a search engine to look for a rental villa. This is a big subject, and one that I do not plan to go into here. Let me just say that it will take a lot of time and skill, and at least a modest amount of money, perhaps a lot of money, if you are to succeed. Even then, do not expect vast numbers of visitors to your site.
